Delimitations This research will not cover access to dental health care for children in middle/high-income families (except were used for comparison purposes).   The data used for this research will be limited to dental health figures for the past five (5) years and be collected from Tucson, the Arizona area.   Data collected will be both quantitative and qualitative but will be restricted to a sample population not exceeding 100 participants. Definitions of Terms Access to dental care: Ability to go to a dentist for emergency care where required, and have regular dental health care checks and treatment as often as required by national dental guidelines. Dental health care: all aspects of dental health care necessary for children to have good dental health and functional teeth. Low socio-economic group: Those children that live on or near the poverty line as defined by census data Assumptions That there is a lack of access to full dental care for children in low-income families That this lack of access to full dental care for children in low-income families does impact their future dental health That there are program examples evident in other geographical regions that have addressed this problem That the variables for this research are the most effective ones for determining a conclusive result. The Importance of the Study This study is important as a framework for identifying dental health needs for children in low-income families.   The findings here can be used by other dental services in low-income areas to develop programs that will provide timely interventions for children in low-income families to enable good dental health during their formative years.   Evaluating the Proposed Research Project Have you read enough literature relevant to your topic to know that your research project is worth your time and effort?

Yes, this project will assist other dental health groups to recognize the need for and then implement programs to help children in low-income families to have access to full dental care. Yes, and I have been assured that there is a need for a study to identify the barriers to access to dental care faced by children in low-income families. Have you looked at your research problem from all angles to minimize unwanted surprises?

Yes, in the course of my review of literature completed before this problem statement was created I looked at issues to do with data collection, identification of a sample population and the methods that will be used to analyze the results from the data collection to ensure that the process would fit with the outcomes I hope to achieve. What is good about your potential project?   It is focused, manageable in terms of sample population and should prove to be replicable which will be useful in future research. What are the potential pitfalls of attempting this research effort?   Determining the data collection methods that will work best for the participants especially in terms of skills required to complete questionnaires and/or surveys may be an issue with this study.

The reliability of data obtained through self-reporting is another consideration that will need to be monitored to ensure that results and outcomes are accurate. What research procedure will you follow? The research procedure will be a mixture of interviews/observations and data collection through the use of questionnaires/surveys using the Likert Scale method to provide numerical data. Do you have a plan to review the literature?

Yes, I will be using online databases with search parameters filtered to include search terms such as “ low-income families” “ children and dental health” and “ factors of dental health” .  The results will also be filtered to include studies published in the past five years, and where possible will relate to research conducted in the United States. Do you have a plan for data collection?   Yes, I plan to use interviews wherever possible as well as questionnaires/survey forms that will be designed specifically for this research study and will be focused on the variables identified for analysis. Do you have a plan for data analysis?

Yes, the plan is to use both qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques. Do you have a plan to interpret the data you collect? Yes, the data will be interpreted in two stages – both quantitative and qualitative.   Quantitative will be interpreted through statistical analysis and qualitative data will be analyzed for patterns in responses and then reviewed by others to eliminate any researcher bias. What research tools are available to you to use?

How available are they and how will you use them? Online databases for the literature review – available through the library and used in accordance with the search terms outlined in question 3 above. Data collection storage – Microsoft Access database and Excel Spreadsheets – these will be used to store data collected so that the information can be analyzed and reported using functions from the Microsoft Access reports function and the Excel Spreadsheets calculation and graphic functions. Statistical Analysis – unsure if the program for statistical analysis is available through your educational institution.   Eliminate if not accessible. Ask two or three peers to read your proposal.

Do they understand what you are proposing to do? What questions do they have? What concerns do they express? I have discussed this plan with classmates A and classmate B and they have the following questions and concerns. That the research design might be too ambitious and that possibly it could be refined to simply include a literature review focused on the research questions specified earlier.
